Modular Backdrop with Rear Projection Screens
Rear projection screens are screens designed to be used from behind, where a light source projects an image onto the screen to be viewed from the front. These screens are commonly used in locations where a clear and crisp image is required in low light situations.
The advantage over front projection screens is that the projection is from behind, so there are no shadows seen from the front. The disadvantage is that you need much more space behind the screen to project.
If you don’t have a lot of space in the room where you want to place your backdrop, front projection is the best option. If you have a lot of space behind the stage itself, you can choose the rear projection option.
Depending on the size of your backdrop, you can choose to use one or more screens, and you can vary the size of the screens. At AV Drop we use three standard sizes of projection screen, but they can also be made to measure. Our three standard sizes are:
↔️↕️ 350cm. x 197cm. (137.8in. x 77.56in. or 11.48ft x 6.46ft.)
↔️↕️ 400cm. x 225cm. (157.48in. x 88.58in. or 13.12ft. x 7.38ft.)
↔️↕️ 500cm. x 285cm. (196.85in. x 112.20in. or 16.40ft. x 9.35ft.)
In addition, our kits (AV Drop Pro, Starter Kit) include the necessary parts and fabrics to be able to mount two rear projection screens on your stage backdrop.

Rear Projection Screens: How Do They Work?
- Instead of projecting the image onto the front of a screen (like in front projection), the projector is placed behind the screen, and the image is projected through the screen material toward the audience.
The screen is made of a semi-translucent material that allows light from the projector to pass through while also diffusing it evenly to create a bright, clear image.

Key Features to take into Consideration
Screen Material
- Specially designed to transmit light efficiently.
- Common materials: PVC, acrylic, or diffusion fabric with a grey or frosted finish.
- Diffuses light in a controlled direction, minimizing hot spots and maintaining contrast.
Projector
Positioned behind the screen, often 6–10 feet away, depending on throw ratio.
Projects the image backward, which the screen flips and displays forward to the audience.
Projector settings must flip or mirror the image so it appears correctly on the audience side.
Lighting Control
- Control light behind the screen by keeping the rear side of the screen (where the projector is) as dark as possible to prevent image washout.
- Block lighting from behind or sides with black backing material (i.e black molton, or blackout).
- Rear projection screens are less reflective than front ones, so projector brightness matters a lot more here.
Size & Throw Distance
A 5,000–10,000 lumen projector is often needed to cut through ambient light and still look punchy.
Raise the screen slightly off the ground and black out the floor underneath to avoid ground bounce.
